One can only wonder where your teacher took his/her training. There is a difference between academic progress and social behavior. Math marks reflect academic progress. They have nothing to do with classroom behavior. It is certainly worth asking a counsellor about this, because it is unethical behavior. In truth, it constitutes blackmail, sending the message, “behave, or I will lower your grades”. It is especially unethical because not every member of the class was talking.

The reason s/he is doing this is because s/he wants to pressure the non-talkers into keeping the talkers quiet. But it isn’t an effective move, and it rarely works.

There is a difference between ethics and law. What s/he is doing is unethical, but not illegal.

First of all, you and your classmates need to SHUT UP! There is no excuse for disrespectful behavior (talking while someone else is talking).

Lowering grades because of behavior is really poor teaching. Put your objections in writing to the teacher. If he does not respond, forward a copy of your objections to the principal. If he does not respond, go to a meeting of your local Board of Education and give them your letter of complaint explaining that you did not receive a response from the teacher or the principal. If everyone backs the teacher’s actions, you better be sure no one talks while he is teaching.
