Teacher’s second job?
Favorite Answer
Some of us do things that are obviously related to our regular teaching: tutoring. You can work at a center, private tutoring company (e.g. Sylvan….I don’t get a commission for recruiting for them…hahahahaha)
Some start their own company/business that can be related to their teaching work (e.g. auto mechanics, art, music lessons, etc) or to their major field of study (e.g. consulting work), or hobby or other personal interest. There are tax advantages for having your own business (visit http://www.teacherstaxservice.com/index.htm or similar sites focusing on tax info specific to the teaching profession)
I developed and taught non-credit classes through community college adult ed programs. Find a topic of interest to you and one in which you have competency…something that solves problems for others (e.g. parents coaching children in homework, etc) and write up your own materials. When you propose the course to the school, specify what you want to get paid per hour, how long the class will be (how may days, how many hours each day) and that enrollees must pay you a materials fee…so you get a stipend and make money on your own publication….which could set you up for starting your own business with further potential tax deductions.
Hope this helps. Best wishes in your endeavors.
On to the answer… every summer I teach summer school for a few different reasons. One, it’s only for a month, 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. Two, it keeps me sharp. Three, you learn different techniques used only in summer school, but that can then be applied to your regular teaching. And four, in VA Beach at least, you earn upwards of $3,000 for just that little bit of extra work. Hello!
I also had another job, on top of summer school. I am a female teacher, as you can tell, and I am not of the average size persuasion, so my clothes can get a bit expensive. To balance this out and still look good without paying for it out the wazoo, I got a job at the mall at my favorite store to receive the 40% discount. I can still work on Saturdays or holidays so I can keep up with the latest fashions without even tapping in to my budget. I’m sure any teacher, male or female, could do this as well, of course. It really makes sense!
Before you start thinking about 2nd jobs, find out if you have the option to be paid year round. If so, take it, and then get one or two summer jobs. It’s really worth it, as long as you don’t have kids of your own yet.
Other ideas I have heard of are tutoring at Sylvan or Huntingdon or Learning RX kind of learning centers. I’m pretty sure those are during the school year, though. Some people like being a server at a restaurant, others like getting free pizza by delivering for a pizza place. You could also check in to being a summer time nanny. Two friends of mine have done this- one is a guy- and they make FABULOUS money, sometimes with benefits!
Good luck!
if you are lucky, you can get an instructor gig, depending on your degree…at a community college. it pays well. you could also bar tend or be a waiter at a trendy night spot.
I’ve also taught English night classes at a community college.
Both night gigs pay about the same…. :-/
So for 4 years I taught during the day, attended night school and waited tables on the weekends.
