Although most people are not going to agree with me.. I am going to say yes.

You need to get your foot in the door. Students should already be able to work independantly and the teacher will leave workt hat they can complete. I teach french, and I never have someone who speaks french to supply my classes. I leave work that the students can easily do on their own, and instructions of each step for the supply in english. That way the students can still complete the work. You need to start somewhere, and if you supply for this class, you will be asked in again to supply for another class. It is difficult to get in.. adn this is your chance to make it into the school.

Yes! And not as a babysitter. The teacher will leave some sort of lesson. Be honest with the students: “Hey, I don’t know much about this subject, so I’d like you to teach me.” From there, you can conduct a class discussion on what they’re currently studying, have them write an essay about the part of chemistry they love/hate, go back to the chapter previous and ask for a summary, talk about chemistry as it applies to their lives….just a few ideas here. If you are a substitute teacher, then you are also a learner, and yes, students can teach teachers. Go for it!

Speaking as a 12th grade student, yes, you should. From my experience, teachers who actually teach ALWAYS leave some kind of an assignment that the students can do. If there is one or two students in the classroom who do not know you should refer them to another student who is more knowledgeable in the subject. Most importantly, if you ever find yourself in that situation, do not let the students know you are ignorant in the subject, for they will most definitely take advantage of you.

Sub in an area in which you are familiar. Do not become a babysitter or a do nothing. Students deserve to have instruction even when their teacher is absent.
