Many people are opposed to terraforming on mars? what planet are you from? this is similar to saying “many people are opposed to flying cars” it doesnt matter what we think, we do not have the ability to do this.

I, like others – have been waiting for my jet pack since the 60’s.

As far as we know there is no life on Mars. Assuming this is true, there is nothing to lose by terrraforming Mars so we have an alternate place to live if the Earth become uninhabitable. the real question is whether we could actually change the planet enough to support human life.

Furthermore, global warming on Earth may cause disaster in the sense that it might change the inhabitable areas of the planet by raising sea levels, creating new deserts, and so forth. But global warming WILL NOT make Earth an uninhabitable planet.

In fact, I believe humans and our technology are advanced enough that most of us would survive a major meteor/asteroid/comet impact – at least those who were not immediately killed by the impact and the resulting explosions or mega tsunamis. The fact we can manipulate our environment would minimize the long term impact on our species.

Arguments against terraforming Mars:

It would be a huge expense, and that money would be better spent working on problems we have here on Earth, such as famines, HIV/AIDS, poverty, etc.

If Mars were terraformed, the change might release dormant bacteria or other life forms that could destroy Earth life that was sent there or that returned to Earth from there.

Global warming may cause disaster on Earth because coastlines could be flooded where people are now living, deserts could increase in size, and crop growing areas could decrease in size. On Mars, global warming could change the planet to make it easier for humans to inhabit because it is now too cold for humans.

I agree that it could be detrimental to terraform any planet. The only thing I have to add to the person above me is that it could (in theory), throw the Earth out of alignment and spell our own doom.

After all, our orbit sustains life and if it changes by just a fraction of a degree that life could be lost. Taking weight and moving it to another planet would change out gravitational pull towards the sun and also change the pull with mars. That could cause a chain reaction that could change the entire solar system (of course I am only talking of the point when large masses of people and equipment begin to go to Mars. If that never happens, what is the point of terraforming in the first place?)

This is just a hypothesis, but if I (and others), prove to be right we could all die. Is it worth the risk?
