Oh my! Not again?

I just went on another interview for a teaching position and I totally bombed. This is like my sixth one and I have been substitute teaching for four years. I know my stuff but when I get into the interview, I freeze and start to babble. I am so frustrated that I think that I should just give up. How will I ever get a teaching job if I can’t do the interviews? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do? Or do you think that I should just hang up my whistle and find something else to do?

Everyone has already given good advice.

Here’s another idea for you:

Ask a teacher you know (someone who has taught more than 5 years full-time) or a Human Resources person to do some ‘mock’ interviews with you so they can critique your style. You may learn something that will help you.

Hang in there !

If you really have guts and want the truth, talk to some of the principals at the schools you have subbed for and ask them for their opinion of you and your skills. Be honest and tell them you want honesty; that your goal is to be the best teacher you can be and you want to know why, in their opinion, you haven’t landed that job yet.

If all of them tell you you should find another career, that would be interesting data for you.

Follow your heart no matter what !!!

I’m not sure why you are bombing out here – If you know your stuff, then you should be on a roll. However…remember to keep your mouth shut until asked a question. Then ONLY answer that question, nothing else. Keep it short and sweet. Have a friend practice with you asking questions. You keep your objective of short and sweet…Too much talking means you are trying to fill spaces that don’t need filling. Too much talking means also that you don’t know what you are talking about! So be cool, short answers, be courteous, (yes, please, thank you) and SMILE a lot.

Hope it helps! Try again – you will hit the lottery sooner or later!

Why not try some relaxation classes or something? I know it is hard but you just need to be able to relax and be yourself. You might be able to get a book or a tape to help you. Why not see if some one will help you practice? Don’t give up teaching, any way you would just need to be interviewed for another job!
