No hugs in school?

While we’re at it, lets ban handshakes and blank stares too. What is wrong with people when they make ridiculous rules like this rather than TEACH the students the difference between appropriate and not?

I grew up in the ’60’s and early ’70’s and don’t remember any of my teachers hugging me. There were some that were fond of me but it was out of the question. I think I agree with a more disciplined approach. Teachers have to remain authority figures. You see kids that are starving for love and your heart goes out to them but the way you help them is by setting the kind of example that makes them want to grow up to be just like you.

The rule is there to protect the school district in case of any litigation. It also gives everyone a guideline on what is or is not acceptable, and since “Touch” can be interpreted so many ways, putting a ban on it prevents that which could be misinterpreted. It also serves to protect those that may want no touching at all. Activities that could in any way be interpreted as sexual or interpersonally agressive have to be treated this way.

I heard one school banned extreme hugging because it clogged the halls. I understand that. I HATE when people stand around and make me late. But if it is just because they don’t find it appropriate, that is stupid. I’d protest by hugging everyone in the school. What the hell is not appropriate about a hug?

I’m surprised such a policy wasn’t already in force. Our school has a no touch policy. Obviously you are not a teacher or you would feel differently after watching what goes on in the hallways. And the younger students are as bad as the older.

It is a sad but necessary commentary on today’s society. I do everything possible to keep my fifth grade students – especially boys – from hugging me. Most of my students are very close to my height . When hugging they usually end up with their head right at my chest level if you know what I mean. There is no way in today’s litigious world that I want ANYTHING I do at school with a child to come into question. It only takes one accusation – true or not to ruin a teacher’s career. I have seen it happen. Sad – but true.

We are talking about a middle school here. I have often seen students on the receiving end of unwanted hugs and physical touching, and the giver says “I was only hugging her”. It is a difficult issue in schools and there often isn’t a “middle of the road” way to deal with it.

It’s nuts. I can’t believe things have gotten so out of hand. It’s like no one has any common sense anymore. So frustrating I can’t even bear to talk about it anymore right now!

It`s a pity we don`t have more principals like her.
