It sounds to me as if it is a Catholic School.

Being 33 years old, she should know what she’s getting into no matter what kind of school it is and should know how to handle herself accordingly. i.e. follow the rules and regulations that are set forth for everyone involved unless there are mitigating circumstances that allow some form of preferential or special treatment.

You also didn’t state what kind of physical punishment is being used.

If it is a Catholic School, the Catholic School of old that I remember would spank the hand or bottom with a ruler.

Being a 33 year old, I seriously doubt that this student will accept a corporal punishment of ANY kind.

I suggest as others did, that your GF take this student aside and also have the school principal or dean or some other official of the school and discuss punishment measures that all can agree upon so as not to seem to be preferential in any way of the treatment to the 33 year old in comparison to the rest of the students.

I would also suggest that these sorts of punishments are not appropriate. Students should not be humiliated. Being sent out of class, or having to work in isolation are far more appropriate.

I don’t know what country you are from, but your girl friend’s methods of punishment are unusual to say the least. All her students should be respected as individuals and not humiliated.
