More blacks than white say “runnin”, instead of running. Do black teachers still let students leave the “g”off

when they pronouce “ing” words, knowing that students will not be able to get good jobs if they speak lazy aborted English?

I dont think it’s just black teachers. In my school, i’ve never heard a teacher correct a student’s grammar. That’s probably because it’s an urban school, and everybody talks like that. They correct grammar in papers, but not in conversations. I’ve heard students talk to teachers using words like ‘aint’ ‘gonna’ ’boutta’… never have i heard a teacher correct them.

I don’t think it’s “aborted” English. For one, people in the South leave off the “g” on words ALL the time, regardless of color. So if you’re in the South, potential employers aren’t going to think anything of it. If you’re from the South and trying to get a job in the North, your Southern accent is going to be a hurdle anyway (we’re associated with stupidity and rednecks, both of which can be found all over the country).

As for what teachers do, we’re trained not to count off for cultural nuances in language when calculating a child’s reading ability. I would assume that most teachers, having this knowledge, wouldn’t constantly correct their students for leaving off the “g.” Instead, I think black teachers would simply model what they feel is best in all aspects of life and hope their students follow suit.

I think quality teachers (regardless of race) would stress the importance of at least being able to speak proper English.

I work in a rural school so I also hear the g being dropped and other poor forms of English (ex: We goin fishin). However I have noticed even teachers who talk like this among friends or family members, will turn on the proper English while in the classroom and expect students to do so as well.

Honestly, I don’t think its important to use proper English, I think its important to know when you should use it.

Dropping the “g” is not a black thing.

And dropping the “g” doesn’t mean they “speak lazy aborted English” and “will not be able to get good jobs.”

I don’t correct students’ grammar when they are speaking because studies show it doesn’t help. Instead, I teach them to know when it is appropriate to use slang, and when they must use “standard English.”

Different ethnic groups have different ways of saying things. Usually, it is the blacks who leave the ‘G’ off. It is the same type of dialect differences that you might see with Asians and Spanish also. We all just have a different way of talking. Some schools don’t enforce it, having to accept that African American dialect is a language. Now, when it comes to jobs, it is up to the employer to decide. Schools don’t care how you talk, just if you pass the standardized tests to graduate.

All different races of teachers correct a child if they are using the wrong grammer or word as they are talking. I guess they just want the children to talk correct english and use proper grammer when in conversation between a group of students. It’s a teacher’s job to teach students, all different coloured teachers correct pupils at my school. =D

You speak backwards of blacks. You say ” we cant get good jobs if…” Which implies WE are not the ones doing the hiring right? THAT in itself shows slave mentality. The hispanics speak with broken english. Even tho they were born here,Some of them cant speak spanish well but grew up in hispanic “hoods”.Yet THEY OWN BUSINESSES in their neighborhoods with their HIGH drop out rates and poor english. LORD KNOWS the white population has varied ways of speaking. The southern whites ROLL over english. But we call that a southern draw, not a sign of a lack of education. Do blacks spell Running… RUNNIN on a test? NO! Just like white southern people who say YALL dont spell it out on a test. Yet no one calls THEM dumb right? Pres Bush says IRAQ like this “EyE-RaCK”. But it is really “Ear-Rock” He says NUKE YOU LER> When its really NUCLEAR. But he’s white so he’s alright right? BLACKS have a very old southern draw that stemmed from their many years in the south. They moved north, and moved WITH each other and the draw continued to further generations. NO DIFFErENT than Hispanics or asians who are BORN HERE yet still have accents due to association and growing up in ghettos that White people created in this country through a documented process called racial steering. So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE leave us alone unless you wish to adress the speach patternsof ALL the races INCLUDING “massa”

I don’t think dropping the “ing” is a BLACK thing, you sound ignorant and racist, people that don’t speak correctly drop this regardless of the race….think before you ask such question it could have been worded differently.
