Finance. The art of finance elludes a lot of people, young and old, and by the time they are aware of a problem it is beyond their control and some of the institutions that are created to help them end-up making the problems worse.

Look at the failure of the housing market. Most of these home loans have been provided to people who can not afford the amount given. This falls back onto the tax-payer because the business’s will either default on these loans or write them off, which reduces their tax bracet.

Car loans – it has become a right to have a car in America and it doesn’t matter the cost. SUV’s sell for enormous prices. The current model of a Cadillac Escalade is around $60,000. Have you noticed how many of these are on the road? You can’t hardly buy a SUV below $30k and if you do it doesn’t have anything but the bare necessities in it. So, this leads to poor purchase choices by over eager consumers.

Last, teach the finance rule of 72. This basic concept is a great tool. For example, say you are buying or investing at a given interst rate of 6%. How long would it take for me to double my money, if investing, or how much debt would this cost me. You would take 6% and divide it into 72, which would yeild 12 and this is in years. So, if you invested $10,000 at 6% it would take you 12 years to double your money. Also, if you purchased a car for $30,000 at 6% with no money down and financed it for 6 years (1/2 of 12) then you would pay back $45,000. A pretty rough estimate but it is a good tool.

Have you ever wondered why something so important to your life isn’t adequately taught to everyone in high school? Another example of keeping the ignorant….ignorant and exploiting them without their own knowledge. The anti-robinhood concept: Take from the poor and give to the rich.

I agree with everyone else – home economics & finances. This is a very important skill that is rarely discussed in high schools and the hard-hitting reality when kids meet the real world is apparent when they fail miserably when it comes to managing their money. Use real examples and case studies of the result of mis-managing money. Find people’s stories and share them with your target audience. Telling people it’s a good thing to know and showing them could make the difference.

Also, teach them birth control. Until they can manage the basics of taking care of themselves, make them understand that they won’t be able to take care of another human as well!

Good Luck!

How about resolving conflicts peacefully? Using a calm and clear tone while using “I Messages.” These are extremely important life skills for all ages. A list of strategies or a check list to follow during conflicts. These strategies must be listed, defined, and modeled through role-play. These are most helpful and ultimately can dictate how we, as a society, choose peaceful resolutions as oppose to the contrary.

Lauren: Who is your target audience? There are so many different options depending on to whom you’re speaking. If you’re addressing younger children you could teach skills about character, ethics, sharing, etc. If you’re teaching older children or young adults responsible spending is a good topic that will hold their interest. Are you a student?
