Is this true about substitute teaching?

I heard that to be a substitute teacher all you need is just a general 4 year degree–doesn’t matter what major it is. And all you have to do is fill out an application. Is this true? Or does it vary by state?—my state is Minnesota

Substitute teaching isn’t really a career, it’s more of a part time job. Although some places will pay relatively well (in my state it’s near $150/day for a qualified substitute) you get *zero* benefits, no step increases (pay is same for a newbie or 40 years on the job) and have no guarantee you’ll be working five days a week. So most people who do it have night jobs or work 12 hour swing shifts (so they have 2 or 3 consecutive off-days even on weekdays), else they are retired teachers, grad students, or stay-at-home moms who want to advance themselves a bit but not go the full mile. In my state, one does need a bachelors degree, previously one could pass by with just a HS diploma, but standards have since changed. One does need to attend a teaching seminar, which is not in any way a ‘degree’ or ‘certificate’, just a series of lectures telling you things like not to be paddling kids who misbehave.

No, in most states you wouldn’t need a 4 year degree.

In Indiana, it varies by school district. Our school district pays more for someone with a bachelors than it does for someone with only 2 years. This is the first year for that, however. It was all the same…48 lousy dollars a day. I don’t know how the subs worked for that.

In NJ you only need 60 college credits to substitute teach. You had to show your transcript with the classes and fill out the application, then get approved by the board of education. That was all.

It does vary state by state, but most states do have a means for putting pretty much any warm body (that has proper clearances for felonies and child abuse) in a classroom. Your state department of education undoubtedly has a website– somewhere on there you’ll find an answer.

In my district in Texas, you wouldn’t even have to have the 4 year degree. I am not certain the number of college hours you must have, but we have several subs that are currently enrolled in the university.

i may well be greater worried with regard to the shortcoming of advice out of your professor. if your professor has substituted a classification interior the previous few years, distinctly a non-consumer-friendly classification, they might desire to a minimum of understand your fears as a results of fact childrens do tend to handle replace instructors like crap. besides the incontrovertible fact that, from what I even have considered, the two the “good larger hand do as I say or you will circulate to the workplace” and the “that’s the task your instructor left, please do no longer kill one yet another attitude” the two paintings greater effective than the compromise between the two. besides the incontrovertible fact that, do no longer enable them to work out worry or you will be able to die. Be beneficial and you will do high quality. good luck.

In CA you need a BA, pass the CBEST, get fingerprinted, and pass the TB test.
