Growing up in China, I remember being in the first grade (5 years old) and being hit, poked, slapped and yelled at by my teacher. But the thing was that we respected her more for it and I don’t think it has done any sort of psychological damage. In fact the teachers use to do this infront of our parents and family, and no one cared. It really does depend on the culture.

Now to the question.

Did the rest of the class get above 90%? Maybe it is the teacher showing disappointment? I remember we had a sports competition. Our class didn’t win and when I tried to be really happy about sports day my teacher screamed at me saying “why are you so happy? we didn’t win!”.

Perhaps in your culture/country, the teacher’s pay rise is based on test scores? If one person only got less than 90% it may have affected the promotion or payrise. The teacher was most likely taking out their frustration.

If you are in a country such as Singapore, which has alot of competition and where there are literally classes for the really clever (EM1), classes for the sort of clever (EM2) and classes for the hopeless (EM3) (“E”nglish “M”ath scores and rankings). Perhaps the teacher is dissapointed you are in a higher level class but not matching up to the expectations of fellow students?

Of course I am NOT saying it is ok to ever cane anyone, especially for test scores. But my point is that in some countries and cultures, it is considred ok to cane, even very young children, and that unless we know the full story behind the caning, then we can’t really give an accurate answer.

Uh…why did you ask this question? Of course it’s not okay! You shouldn’t cane students in the first place, and 90% is a good score.

Different cultures have different rules of conduct. While this would not be allowed in the American or many western cultures, it may be acceptable in other cultures. We must be careful not to impose our cultural beliefs on other cultures, no matter how disdainful we may view them. We would not like other cultures to impose what they believe on us.

Your question can only have a valid answer if it is answered by someone from your own culture, just as driving rules vary from country to country (in America we drive on the right side of the road, but drivers in many other countries drive on the left side), it depends on your country and culture.

No, it’s not…at least here in America…where are you writing from? No teacher has the right to strike a student for any reason, punishment should be doled out by the parents, not someone employed to teach.

“Cane”? this suggests corporal punishment from yet another u . s .. I truthfully have in no way heard of everyone being punished because of the fact they made below ninety% on a mid-term examination. usually corporal punishment is as a results of damaging habit.

I agree with the answers so far, that it is never OK. I would also like to add that any teacher who has to resort to violence in their classroom is not a good teacher.

Corporal punishment should be abolished.

I am really surprised that the US still allows corporal punishemnt in many states. I thought it a thing of the past, but a quick search reveals it fairly common. sad.

Are you kidding?

Caning is illegal in many countries. It should be illegal everywhere.

Caning is physical abuse.
