I’m considering a career in education, but where can I find more information?

I will be graduating from the College of William and Mary in May 2009 and would love to be selected for Teach For America as a presursor to a future career in education. However, I’m not sure what I would be most interested in teaching.

My degree is a Psychology B.of Sciences with a Chem concentration, but I would like to learn more about teaching curriculums in schools. I may want to teach high school science, but not middle school science. For that matter, is elementary education any harder/easier/more rewarding?

Does anyone have advice for me, or can anyone direct me to a site that can answer these questions?

Thanks!

Teaching at the elementary and secondary (Jr. or Sr high) requires a credential from the State in which you teach. Each State has different requirements, so start by contacting the relevant State Dept of Education, Teacher Credentialing / Certification unit for the details about this.

Teacher training programs tend to be 5-year programs (includes the normal BA/BS and practice classroom teaching). Some states also require a certification exam before your are fully credentialed and can start teaching in the classroom for pay.

The key difference with Elem vs Secondary Ed (simplistically) is: Elem = single teacher, multiple subjects

Secondary = single teacher, single subject. So if going into secondary ed, having a major field coinciding with your teaching subject area is critical. Also, when teaching at the secondary level, its a good idea to diversify (be able to teach in more than one area).

In both elem and secondary levels, premiums might be paid for bilingual ability, special ed, etc.

How hard/easy it is to teach depends on how well you get along with students in the age group of your classes. So…if you are good with “little people” …or older students…seems you want to avoid the “puberty pupils”. Relating and connecting with students is a big factor in the hard/easy rating.

If you haven’t already done so, check with your college http://www.wm.edu/education/

and for the Teacher certification instructions

http://www.wm.edu/education/profserv/certifinstructions.pdf

So, get to the relevant State Dept of Education. and if you are contemplating graduating in one state to move to another state to teach…contact the destination State D of Education.

Best wishes.

As a modern-day undergraduate student examining Anthropology i think that i grants help to out. in my view i became constantly drawn to Archaeology with background and discovering new issues with regard to the previous. For form of education it rather relies upon on what you choose to do. in case you choose to have a job bearing directly to Anthropology you will choose a minimum of a Bachelors degree and in case you have an interest in Archaeology which will in basic terms get you as a commencing place in CRM agency (cultural source administration), or you will choose a masters or doctorate. For specific faculties i might say that it is not suitable which college you circulate to as long because of the fact the college has an anthropology application and this technique is exceptionally good which maximum tend to be. For it rather count selection to the place you circulate to graduate college. as long as you get alongside inclusive of your instructors and make sturdy grades you will get into the better graduate faculties. yet i might recommend you circulate to a college based greater on accepted teachers and have somewhat some majors to % between because of the fact Anthropology isn’t for each individual and archaeology is in contrast to how this is shown in Indiana Jones. you artwork long days perchance fairly digging a foot and could no longer even locate something on the tip of your dig. So I recommend you do no longer significant in Anthropology except you have a fondness for it.
