I disagree about going to the school counselor (first answer). Imagine how bad he’s going to feel when he hears that students have asked a counselor to deal with the situation that he’s supposed to be in charge of. He’ll feeled ashamed and belittled. If his students don’t look up to him, thats something he needs to deal with, not a counselor. My advice to you is to treat him with kindness and respect, even when others aren’t. It’ll help increase his self esteem and belief in himself, and feel that at least someone in the class cares for and respects him.

You sound like a very mature student, and a kind and considerate one, too. Probably the best and easiest thing for you to do is just not join in! Also, do you have a good relationship with any of the counselors? You might go talk to them and see what they have to say. Perhaps they could let a principal or a department head know so someone could mentor the teacher and let him know what’s going on and/or give him some tips for how to deal with those students before things get seriously out of hand and NO ONE, not even the good kids like you, learn anything.
