— Mention things from the district’s mission statement (I am eager to work in a district that places an emphasis on ethnic diversity and encourages independent learning).

— Find out about their professional development (I am particularly attracted to this district because they encourage teachers to continue learning, and I am a strong believer in constantly improving my teaching skills and knowledge).

–Mention that you are from there if you are (I feel that it is vital for the school’s success to be connected with it’s community. Being a student from this district myself, I feel that I am an asset to connecting the school community to the whole community).

First, before going to the interview, you need to get as much information as you can about the district. I always look at their “Report Card” online which gives all kinds of information about their test scores, class size, diversity, etc. There may be something there you can use as to why you want to work for that district. IWhen I interviewed with my current school, I had looked at their report card and knew their students had dropped by a lot on their science scores on the standardized tests. I mentioned this during my interview and let them know my endorsement is in science and I would love to work with their students and help them raise their test scores. I know right now I am currently working at a Title I school with some very difficult students. When I apply at other schools, my main reason for wanting to work at the other district is so I can have students who are more sane and behave more normally. Not an answer I can usually give the district. I can, however, say that I have heard their district has a strong discipline program. Another possibility is talking about parental and/or community support for the district. It just depends on the district and what is going on there, but I’m sure you can find something positive about the district and use that as an answer for the question. This gives the interviewer the knowledge that you know something about their district.

I’d say: “I think this school district is a match with the skills I have, and I think I’d fit in good to help educate the students”.

It is kind of hard to do but you essentially want to show that you believe you will be an asset to their schools because ……… (whatever you have to teach that kind of fills the needs they want) say it is elem, tell about what you do well with kids at that level, manage them well, etc. An asset to them is the key word. You are, but if you are young this is hard to poof yourself up to so you might want to ask others who see it from the outside
