how to teach 7y/olds in his operation?

having a pediatric client he is 7 years old and undergo a surgery (appendectomy). the nurse going to explain the surgery to the little boy.

what are the techniques, approach and visual aid for the kid to know the surgery doing to him?

do the nurse needs to be more in medical terms or be in the age of that 7y/o boy, in explaining the surgery?

It’s just my opinion, but why involve the kid in something he doesn’t understand in the first place. I would only go as far as to point out the obvious, not get all technical or definitive. Make it like a bedtime story for seven year olds, serious, needed, but as fun as you can make it, idealistically.

I am really not sure that is your nurses job. The parents should decide how much they want the child to know. The concept of opening the body and removing an organ might not be appropriate for his age. I wouldn’t want my lil guy to know the full details.

She should just follow what the parents are saying to the child. Not take the lead. To both of you it is something you do often so its not as shocking. But not to a lil guy. Good Luck!
