How to Become a Math teacher?

I have my bachelors in business from may of 2006 and now I want to become a math teacher. Can I take the extra math classes at a community college then apply for a certification or masters program for math education? I live in New York. Any information will be helpful! Also my GPA is low. Like 2.2 low! An I completely screwed?

You will have to go to a university or community college and take some Math courses to improve your GPA. Most certification programs require at least a 2.5.

Look at the link from the NY State Education Department. I imagine your questions will be answered there.

Best of luck to you!! Good Math teachers are needed all across the US!!

Some teachers can use scan tron to grade tests, and most math teachers that I know –count homework COMPLETION rather than correctness since they go over the work in class. I do know that I had a math teacher in high school that didn’t grade homework so after two weeks I STOPPED doing homework. I found I could still get a 90-95 on tests without doing the homework.

2.2!!! My college requires a 2.75 to get into the teacher’s certification program! You can get in on probation with a 2.5 if you maintain no less than a 3.0. If you have a 2.2 and try to get in, then your application goes in the trash. What classes made you get a 2.2? Calculus? Or English? Or Spanish?

Try contacting the certification office for the school district where you live, or your state’s Dept. of Education. They can tell you how to be certified via “alternate route” (what we call it in NJ.) You will have to take pedagogy and math courses at college, but it’s best to find out what is required. You will need to bring up your GPA, as many certifications now requre 3.0, but you can do it. You will also have to take exams such as the Praxis.

you can normally get into a past-bach program at a university that is a fast paced crash course into getting your teaching certificate. I’m not sure how NY does it, but in MI you have to take a teaching cert test and then also one in math to get that endorsement. It should be ok if your GPA is low, just make sure you do better this time through. Good luck.

You have a GPA of 2.2…………….would you want your son taught by you…….?……………….my advice is get your masters in math…….bring up your professionalism……and skill as a mathematician and then you will get a fine job and be good at it otherwise go manage a burger king…the country has to many substandard teachers now……
