I pay a tutor $20 an hour, and I consider that a good deal.

Don’t undersell yourself. Although it would be a nice gesture to give someone a first hour for free, when you underprice yourself or give your services away for free, human nature is such that people tend to want more freebies.

I charge $25 per hour for tutoring, which is the going rate around here. I’d guess the cost of living is greater in New Jersey than it is in Wisconsin, though, so I’d ballpark $30-40 as fair for your area. If you’ve got a month to experiment, run an ad in the local paper for $60 for tutoring and see how many calls you get. The next week, run it at $55. Work your way down until you maximize your income for the time you have to invest.

Usually certified tutors can charge around $40 per hour, depending on your location. Do ou have a Sylvan in your area? Are you located near a college?

Your most important start-up material will be REFERENCES! People will want to know what makes you a good tutor. Excelling in specific subject matter is not the only thing that makes a good tutor, so be prepared to have a reference sheet of people who can attest to your ability to assist others.

Hope this helps!

It depends on what the grade level is and what subjects you will be covering. I’ve tutored grades 1-5 in reading, writing and math and I usually charge $40 – $50 an hour.

Regarding what materials will depend on what subject(s). My tutors were helpful (grade school) in having pencils, erasers and practice pages for homework. Though the most helpful attribute was their willingness to watch me learn then take those skills and turn into more lessons that I could better understand per our subjects. BIG HELP! For instance I learned better by visuals and if they incorporated animals in my math words, that helped me better comprehend the problems.

Pricing seems to be around $40 p/hr now for trained private tutor – math for instance. Good luck and thanks for helping those in need!

High school students (as a teacher): $10 – $20.

Obviously you’re not an established teacher so I would recommend charging students within that price range.

Make sure you give free lessons to first-time students.
