Have a paper for the parents to sign as they enter with spaces for parent name/ student name/ address/ phone numbers

Have parents be seated. Introduce yourself and say something about your philosophy of teaching and how long you’ve been teaching. Give parents an indication of how the class or the day proceeds. Provide them with an explanation of your discipline policy and try to elicit their cooperation with it. Explain homework policies and other policies they may need to know or understand. Ask for general questions. Explain that you will speak to parents about individual students during conferences arranged at a later time (especially if there are a lot of people there). Ask if there are any parents who would like to volunteer to help if necessary (as room parents, party assistants, field trip chaperones, etc.)

Thank them profusely for taking the time out of their evenings to attend. Reassure them that you will be available by phone or email and provide these to them.

That’s it !! Best of luck!!

ideally, all of the parents are in the room at the same time. lots of teachers will have the students make/write something and have it sitting on their desk for the parents to see. then, of course, you could speak a little about your plans and expectations, then answer questions.

at my school, the parents just wander in randomly. i usually have a table set up with small refreshments (sprite and cookies/mints) and i have a slide show on the projector (pictures i’ve taken of the class so far this year). In my experience, the parents mostly just want to hear how their child is doing. I’ve found that this is NOT the time to bring up negatives, but plan one positive thing to say about each student. I teach elementary school, and have found the students usually come along, and walk the parents through the classroom and our schedule. I ask that the parents leave me their latest contact information, and roam around answering questions.

just me
I would……..

Have your lesson plans available for the parents to view or even a sample copy for them to take home..

Enforce that teaching is a “TEAM” effort with both the teacher and the parent

Let the parents contact you cell or e-mail (dont give your home number)
