Try looking at the Dept of Defense website. They hire people to go to countries like Germany and Japan to teach English. They’ll pay you and send you there and everything. I looked into it a few years ago, but decided to go to grad school instead. You don’t need to know German.

I have been teaching overseas (in Prague) for the past year, and I love it. I definitely know what it takes to get a job teaching ESL, in any country,so I will do my best to help out.

First, you will need to get (or earn) a TEFL Certificate. I went to a 4 week course in Prague called TEFL Worldwide Prague. It was great. They taught me everything I would need to know in order to get a job, and to begin teaching right away. They offer lots of help getting jobs also, so that’s cool. Just make sure the course you take is NOT ON-LINE, and meets the teaching practice requirements. Most schools will not accept a cert from an on line place.

Most countries will also require a BA, although not all. Central and Eastern Europe will be your best best w/ out one although it is getting to be more standard across the board.

You will not need to know German. Most schools teach the communicative approach (which is what they teach at TEFL Worldwide Prague) and they only want you to speak to students in your native language.

Which brings me to the other requirement. You need to be a Native Speaker. That is your biggest asset. If you are a Native English speaker with a TEFL degree, you should have no problem getting a job in Germany…or anywhere else.

Hope this helps, and good luck. It is seriously a great life style and a fun way to see the world.
