I think a sense of security comes from having a disciplined and structured classroom. If the students all know the rules and the teacher is consistent, that allows the student to always know what to expect.

If you allow poor behavior sometimes and crack down at other times it causes stress and confusion as well as resentment. Both by the student who didn’t get away with it, as well as the one who did.

When each student feels respected and held to the same high standard they can have self respect and feel secure in their environment.

That’s my view. =)

I often struggle with this too. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs pretty much says that if a student’s (or any other person for that matter) physiological needs and safety needs are not met, then there is no real chance of them achieving higher thinking. There are two EXCELLENT (and cheap) books that are available on classroom management. I know that reading books on this subject does not sound like a real problem solver, but they are RESEARCHED based and written by highly regarded teachers (one of them has made MILLIONS of his books and movies regarding teaching and classroom management strategies. These two books are “Classroom Management That Works” by Robert J. Marzano, Jana S. Marzano, and Debra J. Pickering and “The First Days of School” by Harry Wong. Every teacher I’ve had in the education department has used these two books. The links are listed below.

Don’t single them out. If they are great readers, give praise discreetly, if they are a problem, singleing them out is the last thing you should do, this usually emphasizes the problem and make the child feel “different” “not normal” and segregated. Treat them with respect and courtesy, while still maintaining a level of control. Expect the same in return from them, in regards to everyone not just you.

I don’t know what you’re teaching, but I used to teach drama, so when kids performed I could almost always find something good to say about their performance followed by a criticism on how to improve. If you’re teaching something like math that has a right or wrong answer, this might be more difficult, but in drama, I could usually find something.

First you must bend the child over, then ask them to close their eyes. After they do that, slowly start to sing “Sweet Child Of Mine” By Guns & Roses and massage their ears with a toothpick (non-flammable). After about ten minutes the child should be sound asleep. I know this because this is what my teacher does with my son.

Hi! I’m new to teaching. I believe it’s important to be a positive role model. Each student is an individual. They are children and still growing. Peace!
