Help with Teaching Certification!?

I am graduating in December with my bachelors in Psychology, but I decided I want to teach high school. How do I go about getting my teaching certificate without having teaching as my undergrad? Can I just take the Praxis I/II and then get it or what? Thanks for your help!

Many states have alternative certification programs for non-education Bachelor Degree holders. However, each state has different requirements and programs. Some programs require you to take additional college courses while other programs offer in-house classes that you take while you teach on a temporary certificate. In either case you will have to take the state teacher’s exams; not all states use the Praxis.

The simplest way to find out the details for your particular state is to either go to your local school district’s web page (or visit their office) or visit your state’s Department of Education webpage. You will find all the information you need at these sites.

Some of it depends on what state you are in.

I also recently graduated with a bachelors in Psychology, I had also thought about getting certified to teach 7-12. In my state the Psychology certification is lumped with Sociology and Anthropology. In addition to certain lower level psyc classes, intro to sociology and intro to anthropology are also required. You’ll have to take the Praxis I and II. You will have to take a bunch of courses in Secondary Education, probably about 20 credits, plus a semester of student teaching. In Pennsylvania, where I live, many colleges offer a “Teacher Education Program” which is a program designed for people that have a bachelors degree and want to go on to get a certification. Check out your state’s Department of Education’s website. I would assume that other states and colleges have similar programs.

It depends on your state. In Missouri, as long as you have a bachelors in anything you can take the Praxis in anything and become certified. Many teachers actually do this to become more employable.

I would check with your state’s Department of Education, or the college you graduated from to see what you need to do.

Good luck.

You will probably need to take additional classes in education as well as have a field experience (student teaching). Maybe you could just continue at your current college/university’s Graduate school to complete the requirements. Check w/ your state’s Dept of Education website for specific info. Best of luck!

Usually you have to take graduate classes in education if you already have a BS or BA completed. Then you would have to take the state certification tests in the area you want to teach also a college level basic skills test if you are in Illinois. Go to you state board of education site and check out qualifications to teach. Or go to a college counselor in the education department and see what they have to say.
