Elementary School Seating Arrangements?

Can anyone explain to me why the elementary students desks are grouped together? What ever happened to the desks being in rows?

It is for collaborative group work. Students work in groups to discuss readings, answer open ended questions, debate issues, brainstorm, complete projects, conduct experiments, play learning games, etc. etc. etc.

As an elementary school principal, I encourage my teachers to seat their students in small groups. Even though most of the work is done independently, students gain a sense of team and many social skills. As a teacher I found that we could do lots of cooperative learning activities. It never seemed to be a problem when it was time to work alone.

They are grouped together because so much group work happens in elementary school now. Things have changed.

Studies have shown that children learn better in groups, even when not doing “group” activities.
