do you teach cursive writing?

i am starting my second year of teaching, third grade. last year, i didn’t “really” teach cursive. i mean, i had the chart up, and kind of left it up to them…i went over some basic strokes but that was about it. i talked to my principal and he was ok with it, although the other 3rd grade teachers do teach it, give a grade, etc. to me, there are other things that are more important. i certainly don’t want flames here, am just curious…

You said your principal was ok with it. Do teachers in 4th grade or beyond in your school require students to write in cursive? Were your students able to read cursive? Some teachers may write assignments or directions in cursive & their parents may write notes in cursive.

That said, there are schools doing away with it, feeling like you do that other things are more important & there just isn’t enough time.

I am a second grade teacher, and beginning 2nd semester, I taught cursive writing. Each week we worked on something different, which the students were required to do. However,I gave them th option of using it other times. Most of them used it because it was new. When I taught 1st grade at a private school, it was required for all work. My personal feeling is that it is easier to teach to younger students. For 3rd grade up, I would say that they could do print or cursive whichever is the more legible.

When I taught 3rd grade it was hard to find time to “teach” it. It was more a completion grade for the practice pages.

I have a son entering 3rd grade this year, so I’ll be interested to see how they teach it. It’s my understanding that by mid-year, everything must be written in cursive.

In 5th grade, all “formal” pieces of writing and tests must be in cursive if not word processed. But things like notes do not have to.

I learned to write cursive in second grade and in third grade I had to write it, meaning my teachers wouldn’t accept my work if I couldn’t write it. A new girl in third grade had to learn it in just a few months because she had never been taught it. If a child that was in your class switches school and they don’t know cursive it may affect if they are accepted or not and if they will need to learn it in a shorter period of time than normal so I recommend teaching it for the benefit of the students in your class.

I teach 7th grade and the only cursive requirement I have is that the students write their names in cursive. I tell them that it is to prepare them for signing those multi-digit paychecks they will earn as adults. 🙂 Some choose to write everything in cursive, others do so in spurts.

I do keep a cursive chart up as a reference and my students often refer to it.

I think we should teach not only cursive writing but calligraphy as well. Why not know more than less, education is not esoteric. Less is not more, more is more.

I was taught cursive writing, but i dont know what the current educational policy/standard is on it. It just seems ridiculous that kids wont really know how to write in cursive. I mean what is a signature if it is in print…

I’m not a teacher, but in all my school career, the only time I ever needed to write in cursive was 3rd and 7th grade. They both said in high school, I’d need to do it a lot when I never had to.

Too many people curse in today’s society. Isn’t it enough that you can’t go to a schoolyard without hearing some ankle-biter using the “F” word?

Don’t teach cursive writing! What kind of teacher are you? Only teach kids the GOOD words to write!
