Do you need to take lecture notes?

I recently started university and in my first few lectures i haven’t really noted much down on my writing pad. I am not to sure what i should be putting down??

Do i even need to take notes? Everything we are taught is available for download from the blackboard online (known as VITAL), so do i need to take any notes?

People tend to retain more when they are actively engaged. The point of making notes is to help yourself remember in a way that fits how you learn. You don’t have to write down everything – but try to make enough notes to help you recall the point of the lecture. Another option is to write down thoughts you have about the material, such as questions, disagreements, areas where you’d like to know more. You might also make some diagrams. Anything to keep yourself from spacing out or letting the lectures just flow over you.

All that said, some people find it helpful to record lectures (talk to your professor.) Also, some people find it helpful to doodle or even knit to keep their hands busy in class. The main thing is to stay alert and keep responding to what’s going on.

Taking notes re important points might help your comprehension and recall. Other than that, if the material is available on line you can always make notes later if you desire and don/t have a habit of procrastinating. There must be some things presented by the lecturer that are not written on the board. You should note those that are salient.

Sometime taking notes helps keep what your learning in your memory. It uses the right side of your brain, your creative side when you take notes. Using both sides of your brain while learning helps you learn even better. I would take notes just to get yourself more involved and make sure you are actively listening during the lectures. Good luck.
