Do i need teaching credential if I have a Master’s Degree?

I am planning to study Theology in Graduate School (I will be getting my Bachelor’s Degree in History this May) and I am thinking of possibly teaching in high school once I get my Master’s. BUT do I still need teaching credentials to teach even if I have a Master’s Degree?

Yes, completely. Now places will hire you, but it will be provisional and will require you to take the education classes while you teach. If you’re going for your masters now, and you think you’ll want to teach, it’ll be in your best interest to just start taking education classes now. You’ll never be a career teacher in any public school system without them, and some systems will pay you remarkably less until you’re full certified.

Private schools go by their own rules.

All states require a teaching credential. Some districts will hire you and put you in a credential program, but you WILL be required to complete it to stay employed. (often the deal is…join the district, well give you the credential work and the student teaching…you commit to 5 years)

NCLB requires highly qualified teachers. this means;

subject matter verification tests

state approved teacher credentialing program with student teaching portion

teaching in your subject area.

masters/phd does not matter.

good luck!

Since most public schools don’t offer classes in theology, I assume you’re planning to teach at private/religious schools. You don’t need to be certified to teach at private schools – you don’t even need a masters degree. They can hire whoever they want. However, if you want to teach something at public schools, you WILL need to be certified, no matter what your degree is.

It depends on your State.

To get the Teacher’s Certificate you probably will have to take some courses at the College of Education and do a semester of student teaching in a high school.

It depends upon the district. While most would prefer a teaching credential, some districts are waiving the requirement because they are in serious need of teachers.

If you want to teach in Public Schools you need to be certified. Private Schools have their own rules and you might be able to find a job in one. They generally do not pay as well as the Public Schools.

you need to have a license in your state or the state you plan to teach in, though if you’re teaching in a charter school or a private school (such as a catholic school) each one is different so you’d have to check their requirements. there’s a lot of tests that you have to take to get a license, as well as the praxis is most if not all states.

Each state/province has their own regulations, but yes, you will still need teaching credentials.
