Yes, all these answers are correct and tell you exactly what you need to know. Now I’ll tell you something else that may help you. Sometimes out of state tuition can be waved or gotten around. For example, the college I went to for my undergraduate degree waved out-of-state tuition to students who participated in specific programs, like band or choir. The university wanted to improve its numbers in those organizations, so they recruited people from other states by offering this waiver.

Another way to get it waived is if you live really close to another state. For example, my sister and I graduated from high school in southern Mississippi. Some of the colleges in southern Alabama offered out-of-state tuition waivers to southern Mississippi and southern Florida high school graduates because the states are really close together. My other sister did the same thing – graduated high school in southern Florida and went to college in Alabama. I also attended a college in northern Alabama while living in northern Mississippi and did not have to pay out-of-state.

Here’s yet another way to get out of it. Claim residency in the state that the college is in. Sometimes there are stipulations for waiting periods and/or certain things you must do specifically for college. For example, my husband and I moved to Texas so he could go to graduate school several years ago. The college required us to get Texas driver’s licenses and register to vote in Texas, then live in Texas for a year before we could get out of paying out-of-state tuition. It sure saved a ton of money.

One other thing, sometimes universities offer to waive out-of-state tuition to children of their college alumni. Did your parents go to college in another state?

If you find some colleges and/or programs you really like out of your state, look into these possibilities. It could save you a lot of money

In state tuition is the lower tuition rate that colleges and universities charge students who live in the same state the college is located in. For instance if you live in the state of Michigan and go to the University of Michigan, your tuition will be less than it would be for a person who lives in Indiana and goes to the University of Michigan. Out of state tuition applies to a student who goes to a college outside of the state they reside in. In this case the Indiana resident would pay more to go to the U of M than the Michigan resident.

In-state tuition is what a student will pay at a university or college if he/she is a resident of the state where the school is located.

If you are not a resident of the university’s state, you will pay a lot more for out-of-state tuition.

Usually it is only the state (public) schools that have a difference in the cost. (It is because your or your parent’s taxes help pay for the education at your state’s schools)

Most private U’s have one cost.

if you live in the same state as the college you plan to attend, the tuition will be less than someone coming from out of state
