It is possible for a non-native speaker to teach English in Japan, but you should know ahead of time that it will be an uphill battle for you. Many schools will not even consider non-native English-speaking teachers, and most prefer native speakers. That’s not to say it can’t be done, just that it will be harder for you than it would be for a native speaker. If you really want to do it, just keep at it and you’ll find something.

Also, you do NOT have to know Japanese to teach in Japan. I know many, many people who taught there and never learned any Japanese at all. That being said, it can certainly be useful. I learned Japanese when I was there because it just makes life a whole lot easier.

Good luck to you.

To teach English in Japan you need to know English as well as Japanese because there could be a chance that you would to have to translate few sentences or words in the native language hence it would be an added advantage if you know both English as well as Japanese.

If you are good enough, then yes. Many people of all different backgrounds teach English in Japan, because they pay so well.

Best of luck!
