I’m not sure if manners are taught in the schools in France but I can tell you that when I taught in France, students were much more respectful of their teachers there. The teacher-student relationship is very formal in France. French students are required to do much more classwork and homework than students here. They are required to take very difficult tests which determine which schools and which academic programs they are qualified to enter. This is very competitive and causes much stress in students and their parents.

Here in the US, there tend to be informal relationships between teacher and student. Students do not really respect teachers here in the US; they cuss, are disrespectful, and generally are not chastised by their parents for this behavior. They probably treat their parents the same way for that matter. High school students work after school until very late at night so they don’t do homework and often want to sleep during class.

Schools in France and in the USA are very different. Neither system is perfect though.

I really don’t know, that is a good question. In most schools in the US manners are not taught formally but many teachers teach them in their classroom. I personally teach and encourage basic manners (please, thank you, your welcome, excuse me) what is and isn’t appropriate in different situations, but I see many teachers let this go by as if its not needed…as well as many parents. I feel like manners are something many feel are outdated here. Its such a shame so many seem to feel like others and even themselves shouldn’t be treated with respect any more.
