Advice for new substitute teacher….?

Would it be better to sub as an aide in the classroom for the first few times to get an idea or to just jump right in? I’ll take any advice! Thanks!

It wouldn’t hurt. I also would make myself an emergency sub folder with worksheets, etc for each subject so you don’t get stuck if the teacher didn’t leave any plans.

Accept in a grade or subject that you believe you already know something about. You will feel more confident.

Yes, have several ideas of something to do IF the teacher hasn’t left plans, BUT

if there are plans, PLEASE follow them. The teacher knows what she/ he wants the students to do. Respect that, even if you think your ideas are better.

Don’t be pals with the students; in fact, you just might have to be on the tough drill sergeant side with some classes. Don’t touch the kids.

Don’t believe everything (or even much) that the students tell you about the way class is run.

Don’t give out the hall pass unless someone is dying.

Do wander around the classroom while the students do their work. DO NOT just sit behind the desk, whether doing nothing, or reading, or worse — knitting or crocheting!

Great substitues are a blessing. Some others, however, will never pass through my door again.

Good Luck

That would probably help to aide first just so you know what to expect. If you do that a few times than you can better understand the kids when you start to sub. Just let them know who’s the boss, but also have fun with them. I think it’s best to start the class off in a way not dealing with the subject, maybe talk about current events or something like that.

Best of Luck!

It might be a good idea to start off as an aide to get an idea of what goes on in the classroom. Once you’ve had that experience, then subbing will hopefully be easier.

I’m not sure if you mean to work to get experience while you are in school…But I’m a sub and I sub for the actual teacher. You make more money when you sub for the teacher and I’ve had a great experience at it…

Get a little experience the classroom… see what it is like from the teaching side if you can, but just for a little bit. You will learn to teach by teaching.

elementary or high school? For elementary have at least 2 lesson for each grade that U can use if regular teacher doesn’t leave enough work or u do not understand work left. For high school….pray & watch your back.

while I’ve done both, as a first timer, you might get a better sense of what is tolerated and what isn’t by watching how a teacher acts towards her class as far as what she accepts, as far as behavior is concerned, what is cautioned, and what is truly punishable.
