Police can’t dish out punishments in the majority of cases – that’s a job for the courts, who also decide whether someone is innocent or guilty. Vigilante gangs who beat up offenders may not be as thorough as the courts in ensuring someone is guilty before they dish out their punishment. How long would it be before those who had the authority to dish out beatings on the streets started targeting people for their own ends? And what happened to ‘innocent until proven guilty’? The solution is freeing up police officers, so they’re not stuck in an office filling in paperwork for four hours after every arrest they make. We don’t have too few police officers, we just have them wasting a lot of time doing things other than policing.
