2 year or 4 year degree for an IT major?

I am currently attending a 2 year community college. My original plan was to get my associates degree there and then transfer to a 4 year university to get my bachelors degree. I am going of a major in Information technology because my interest is with working with computers and it’s a broad field. My mom is telling me that she herd that I can get a job in that field off just a 2 year degree. Although it sounds appealing to be able to get a good full time job after just 2 years of school with an associates degree, I think it would be better to go for 4 years and get a bachelors degree so I could get a better position and a higher salary. Which would be the better way to go?

Only go 2 years if you know that someone will hire you off the bat. If you can’t find work after two years, complete the degree. Make it a priority to go for 4 years, but while you are studying, also begin interacting with members in the field. Know exactly how they think and act. That way, when you finish school, you will have some experience to jot down on your resume.

Oooh that’s a tough one to answer. IT is the only professional field that I know of where it’s a lot like acting, where when the right opportunity comes along it’s always better to take it or else somebody else will and something like it won’t come again for a long time.

I know several people who are making some sick amount of money in the IT field, and all they have is either an associates degree or a certificate. It’s one of the few fields where if you have enough drive, skill, and most importantly experience, the hiring organization will take you on regardless if you have an advanced degree or not. And you can get some SICK benefits too, like getting your moving expenses paid for and a sign-on bonus.

So from personal viewing experience, I would recommend looking for a job right after your 2 year community college schooling, then when you’re hired and begin establishing your career in it goto night or weekend schooling for the remaining 2 years and then you can command even more money. That way you get the best of all worlds. Good luck.

You are right, go for the 4-year degree. Transfer to another school. IT jobs are hard to find in this part of the world (places like China and India are a different story) so it’s best to maximize your job options by getting more education. And the IT oasis in the US is California, and if you want to make enough money to support yourself in such an expensive area, an associates will not be enough. Good luck to you!

Do the 4 year degree, because for a lot of the IT jobs they require the 4 year. Plus it would also guarentee that you would end up making a lot more money.
