School in Spain?
If i want to go to spain and live and work there in January and the university in Madrid doesn’t start till October, would i need to get a student visa before i go to spain or could i get one while i’m there?

You should contact the University of Madrid with these questions. If you are a US citizen, then you can stay in Spain for up to 3 months, however, you will probably need to come back and process your student visa at a Spanish consulate/embassy in the US.
