My job history is messed up. What should I do?

hey guys I am about 21years old and I have a hard time finding a job because I dont have any real good references. At most of my previous jobs I was terminated due to bad performance, and it is difficult to explain this on my resume or at interviews. Also I have done alot of job hopping in a short period of time. In all I have about one year of work expericene. I do have about a year of college under my belt. Is there anything I can do to fix this and get a fresh new start?

Yeah. Get a job, and stop getting fired.

Ok I’ll be the “bad” one when it comes to answering this question. I used to have the same problem. I have been fired, and job hopped. One day I got my sh** together though and now I am a registered nurse with GREAT references and job history. I think we all go through awkward employment times. So first off, you have to know how to beef up your resume with capabilities vs. experience. What can you do for them? Maybe you have the aptitude to focus on many tasks at once, you might be a self starter, etc..As for references, use personal ones that you KNOW will be + ones. If they want professional ones, try using a friend to say you worked for them. Maybe you babysat, cleaned their home, or laid carpets with them. Say you worked for a business that is no longer in business. Something they can not verify. Believe me, and interview is SELLING YOURSELF #1. Be confident..tell them what they want to hear! Build yourself up! But be ready to make a TRUE CHANGE in your professional life from this point on! Hope this helped.

Consider that you might be looking for work in an area for which you are totally unqualified by education, skills and temperament. Go to a job counseling center and ask for help. Find something you want to do, enjoy doing and then learn everything you can about it.

One year of college “under your belt” is worthless unless it leads to another 3 or 4 years of college. So stop putting that on your resume. Educated, college graduates, will see that as “loser”!

If you put, continuing my college education on a part time basis as I work, that might be considered a plus.

Volunteer at a place you want to work at or an organization that needs help. Show up and do a good job. If you’re responsible and professional you will be able to use those folks for references.

Do not attempt to explain or excuse your poor performance at past jobs. Own up to it and concentrate on the “new” you. Encourage future potential employers to contact your new references
