I really want to study abroad.?

Whereas some cities correlate with certain careers (ie. Chicago/Graphic Design, L.A./Film and Digital Media), are there any cities OVERSEAS that are worth traveling to for a student interested in journalism? My school send Pre-Med students to Maastrict, and English majors to Europe – what about us journalists? Is there anywhere for us to study??

The thing about journalism is that you need to know a little about a lot of subjects – the actual craft of writing news/reporting isn’t that tough as long as you have a broad view of the world.

I’d suggest studying in a city you’ve always wanted to go to, with a culture that interests you. If you want to travel (and you should, as a journalist), go to Europe and buy a train pass and explore as much of the EU as you can. Or go somewhere completely unfamiliar like China. What you do while living there is more important than the classes you take when you’re doing study abroad. The most important thing is to take in the culture and talk to as many people who live there as you can – don’t spend all your time hanging out with the other US students.

And don’t go to London, that place is a ****hole.

I think it depends on whether you want to write while you are abroad. If not, go somewhere to get a unique perspective on the world, somewhere you may need to write about later. Or perfect a foreign language which will undoubtedly come in handy in journalism. Perhaps pick a place where a lot is happening, a major world city, like Brussels or Tokyo. Otherwise, pick a place where you will be able to write while you are abroad and get perspective on the journalistic atmosphere somewhere else. If you are from the States, somewhere like London or the UK on a whole will offer you opportunity to either write for a school paper since you speak the language or intern. I know a student who recently did a semester abroad in london and interned one/two days a week at a magazine and even had a few pieces published. Maybe consider somewhere like Paris, where a lot of US publications have correspondents. You might also want to consider Australia or New Zealand which have some school with well known journalism programs, I think Macquarie in Sydney may be one.

Journalism is good in England and I think in Russia too. If I were you I would rush to London. (Although I do not like the country intself…)

Moscow is fine too, but you either have to speak Russian or start with a pre-university programme, where you study Russian journalist language first.

It depends how far you want to travel…
