From a C student to an A+ student?

I am scared to go back to school because I have always struggled to get beyond C grades. I know it has to do with my style of studying. How do I study so as to remember stuff clearly and fast. I want to be able to complete my chemistry class with an A+. Please advise on the best methods of studying. How do I recall stuff efficiently?

Thanks

yosh.

Memorizing stuff isn’t MEANT to be done quickly and easily. Getting past a C require dedication and hardwork. Time management is key. Write everything down in a planner and schedule the amount of time you’re willing to spend on each subject. For example, if you have 6 classes, start at a set time and devote a certain amount of time to each assignment. Unless your computer is needed, don’t turn it on. Or at least don’t sign onto AIM, your email or MySpace. When it comes to remembering facts, take good notes. And look at them for a few minutes each day. Cramming before a test is really not the best way to study unless you’re confident in your memory. And even then, because chemistry is so conceptual, you may have difficulty. Ask your teacher if he or she could provide review guides that discuss what will be on the test. If not, go and ask directly. Most teachers want you to do well and don’t mind telling you.

Just keep trying and work hard and you should do well. Getting an A+ may be difficult but nothing’s impossible. Besides, your grades in the past don’t affect what grades you get in the future.

This book has a lot of great ideas:

It worked for me. It’s never about how many hours you study, it’s about how well you study, how focused you are, and how well you understand the material.

In chemistry, just always finish your homework, never get behind on your reading/assignments, and if there’s anything you don’t understand, don’t be afraid to ask your teacher for clarification/explanation. You can also hire a tutor.

You can try writing down key concepts/formulas/etc. on index cards. Take some of them with you at all times so that whenever you’re stuck somewhere with nothing to do, like in a bus or waiting in line, you can make use of your time studying the notes in those cards.

There’s no surefire way to guarantee an A+ grade. Some people are just not amazing at Chemistry. But if you maintain the best study habits possible, you will get the best possible grade and know that you did your best.

Of course finding the time to study is the most important. Don’t get stuck on phone calls or email chats when it’s time to study. When it’s time, say “sorry I’ve gotta go” period! Start at the same time each night, like 8:30. Otherwise you’ll put it off.

My best way to study was to read the book, and then write everything down in my own style as I did it. Then I review my notes, which doesn’t take nearly as long as rereading the book and really puts it in my head way better. All the best, I know you can do it if you want to bad enough!

you have to learn how your memory works. i’ve friends who seem to do best with auditory input. so they try reading the book aloud. or they look for a popular song and set important points into the lyrics. an aquaintance said that his professor created characters from the periodic table to help them remember their properties. (i.e. hydrogen is easy, she hooks up with practically anyone, etc) i find that visual works best for me. i write a summary of the important points. i also note down the questions that the professor asks and study along those lines

make sure u understand the material u have to study. so ask lots of questions. and maybe start a study group. and it helped me to study my material everyday so you don’t have to cram before a big test.
