Can my US daughter study in the UK (college)?

My 20 year old think she is going to go study in the UK. She said something about a community college in Bath. Now…she has a C average, does not do well in most courses because she is lazy. She has no money and we are not going to pay for a thing as we think she wont be able to manage. She is not responsible and is bad at paying bills, etc. She says she can get loans and grants and go to a community college and get a job. Is this possible???

Studying abroad is a very expensive commitment and if she as no money and if you are not willing to fund her studies then the possibilities of her studying anywhere abroad are not very good.

I say this because to meet immigration requirements you must prove that you can fund your course and living expenses.

Now it is possible for U.S citizens to use a US federal loan to study in the United Kingdom but there are only a couple of hundred universities and colleges approved by the US Department of Education for participation in the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) scheme.

For more information on this visit the website below:

Saying that when it comes to meeting those immigration requirements for funding, a loan cannot be the sole support. She must show that she as other funds of her own or yours available and if she is using your money than you have to sign a affidavit of support for her.

Secondly universities in the UK require international students to maintain a minimum grade level throughout her entire time at the school. So if she is not committed in doing so then she could lose her student visa status, which basically means she would have to leave the country as she would not be eligible to stay any longer.

She as to be committed as this is not something to be done half-hearted.

Below I have included various websites full of information for U.S citizens wishing to study in the United Kingdom from application procedures, selecting universities, obtaining visa…. everything.

If you or your daughter have any more questions or want any more information, help or guidance then please do not hesitate to contact me directly either via email or messenger (just click my profile) and I would be more than happy to provide assistance.

Possibly, but if she’s a lazy lackluster student in the USA, what makes her think it will be any better in the UK? Especially considering that she’ll have even LESS of a support network from family and such that she has now.

This sounds like a girl that needs to pull out of school totally for awhile and get her bearings in life. If she’s dead set on Europe, she ought to consider a hitch in the Air Force or Army with a guaranteed posting to Europe. I mean this seriously. It will give her a chance to mature more, become a more disciplined person, and have a worldly experience under her belt for when she does finally return to academia. On top of that, the services have programs that will help fund her education when she’s a veteran.
