Can i get in???

I was soo excited… i finally found my dream school…the University of Miami. I heard that this school is really hard to get into to, and I don’t have the best grades. Please…if you know what you are talking about can you tell me my chances, and if I should even be excited about applying. I have 3.14 GPA on a 4.0 scale, 22 on ACT writen, club president, NHS, Student council, varsity track, just quit varsity basketball. Have been in youth groups and stuff like that, african american, and katrina victim. Do i have a chance???

According to the College Board, only 6% of their admitted students have GPAs under 3.25, and the middle 50% of their students have ACT scores between 26 and 31, so your chances are somewhat limited; I would suggest that your application essay should be really meaningful and carefully writtten in order to give you an opportunity. For the person who suggested that you would get in because you are a person of color – the University of Miami is at least 30% students of color already, so that may not play much of a role in their decision (not to mention that it is insulting to assume that you would get in for that reason alone, regardless of their standards!).

uhh…I’m guessing Miami University in Florida? There’s one in Ohio, but it’s not that prestigious of a program…

I think it sounds like you have a good chance, and you know what you’re looking for. Apply, and boast yourself as much as possible. Remember these people only know you from a few papers that you send to them, so make sure you list every achievement you’ve had in your high school career. Let them know how great you are and why they should accept you.

I think you do; now take that excitement and talk to their admissions counselors! Look at their application, but definitely talk to an admissions officer, and be prepared to say why you want to go to this school.

Good luck!

Oh, yes. It’s not Ivy League, you know, and, even then, sure you’d have a chance with your background and their compelling need to expand their diversity.
