Would repeating a course hurt my chances of entering grad school?

Right now I’m a pre-med undergrad, and I’m undecided on going into vet medicine, human medicine, or even PA school. Every adviser at my college has always held Organic Chemistry on a pedestal- if you get less than an A, you might as well not go into medicine.

Most people agree that the advisers are all exaggerating and not taking volunteer work, clinical experience, etc into account.

I did terribly on my 1st O-Chem exam, and my 2nd one is looking terrible as well.

Which do you think is the lesser of these two “evils”?

– Barely passing O-Chem with a C, or…

– “Failing” O-Chem the first time (with the knowledge that I’ll be able to talk during grad school interviews about the stressful semester) and retaking it with a B or better?

My college shows your original grade on your transcript even though it doesn’t count toward your final GPA, so they would know I got a D or lower the first time around.

Would they understand, or is it better to barely scrape by with a C?

I wouldn’t give up so easily on your organic class. This class is very cumulative in nature so you may eventually pick up 2+2 =4 by your final exam time and redeem yourself. Besides, you have to take two organic semesters, so if you do better in your 2nd semester then your application will not look that bad. You will need to put a lot more effort and see what is going wrong with your study method now because evidently it’s not working out. Most every student struggles in organic, so it’s not like what you’re experiencing is unusual. The key is to SURVIVE your first semester of organic with at least a C. If you can’t hack that minimum level, then med schools will know you’re not a good candidate — they already know all the nitty gritties on how students who don’t have what it takes will withdraw or fail the course then retake it later.

Failing Ochem would hurt you when your trying to get in medschool. You might just want to drop out of this course or audit it for this semester and then retake it over the next semester or summer. If you can get a C in this course I think you should stick around and finish the course. Quite a few number of med students do retake ochem or usually have B or so and grad schools do understand the level of this class, so as long as your not applying to a well known university you’ll be fine.

Failing a subject, even if you got a B on your second try, might be enough to prevent you from getting in. My experience with screening prospective graduate students is limited to science and engineering. I suggest you contact a professor at one of the schools you are interested in and ask for his advice. Asking someone who knows will not hurt your chances for grad. school, and you will have more confidence in the answer than you will have in what people here tell you.

how about barley passing with a C, and then retaking and earning an A? Why do have to fail terrebly or do decently.
