Because it determines who gets National Merit scholarships. If you don’t think you’ll come anywhere close to the cutoff, though, then there’s really not much benefit to taking it except to get more practice taking standardized tests.

I guess because colleges are more selective these days and sometimes test scores can give you that edge over other applicants that may be just as qualified as you. I personally never took PSATs or SATs and I now have a masters degree. So it all depends on the route you want to take to your future.

Really high scores on the PSATs can lead to scholarship offers. I received an offer for $15,000 per year at a school based on my PSAT score, if I named their school as my school of choice on the SAT.

The PSAT is the pre-qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. If you’re even REMOTELY close to making that cut, you’ll get scholarship offers by the carload. I know, becuase I DID. It’s good to be WANTED!!!
