Part of it depends on where you live: if you live somewhere where the ACT is as common as the SAT, you might take the PLAN (pre-ACT) test in 10th grade.

Some places will also have you take the PSAT in 10th grade for extra practice, even though it’s generally meant for 11th graders (it’s the NMSQT as well as being a practice SAT– National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, and you can only qualify in 11th grade). It’s becoming more common for students to take the PSAT in 10th or even 9th grade.

If you like, you can even go ahead and take the real SAT and/or ACT in 10th grade (I did!) for the practice– it can’t hurt!

For AP tests: whichever ones you take AP classes for. Where I went to high school, sophomores could only take AP World History, AP European History, and/or AP Psychology, so those were the only tests 10th graders took. The AP history tests/classes require a LOT of reading and, really, test your memorization skills more than anything; AP Psych is one of the easiest AP tests, but you do cover a LOT of vocabulary through the class. Any AP classes and tests you take are going to be challenging, because that’s what they’re there for! But if you study well and keep up with it, the tests aren’t all that bad! Good luck!

The PSAT.

As far as other tests go, you consider taking SAT Subject tests toward the end of your courses. So, for instance, if you just took Chemistry, you might consider taking the Chemistry test. For some subjects, like the sciences and the histories, you might be better off waiting until you have taken the AP course.

AP tests–you take whatever ones you are taking courses for this year.

The ASVAB may be helpful. But I never took it.
