It’s a corruption of the Latin word ***** which means black.
My father told me about an incident, almost a century ago, when he had a black Labrador dog, which he called ***—-. The dog ran away from him and he was calling it back when he was approached by a very angry Afro-Caribbean. He had great difficulty explaining that he was calling his dog!
