There is a subtle, but large difference between the two tests. The SAT is geared towards critical thinking and can somewhat accurately tell you how strong your brain is overall rather then how much you learned in school. The questions are typically easier, but more involved than the ones on the ACT. The ACT is geared more towards what you have learned at school. It has questions that deal specifically with things that you learned in school and will have more diffucult math problems that are less involved with thinking and more with remembering. Take the SAT if your just smart, but take the ACT if you arent that intelligent, but you do very well at school. You can take the SAT and ACT whenever you want, but you might feel a bit out of place since most people that are taking the two tests are in their junior or senior year of high school. If you want to go to a public university or a better private university then you are required to take atleast one of them. Check the universities that you are talking about and see whether or not they require one of the tests or the other. Most universities that arent complete crap require you to take atleast one of them.

The SAT is accepted by all colleges, but the ACT is not. You can take the SAT at any time, even in yourposition. Yes you do need to take the SAT to get into uni of macomb. When I first took the SAT, my score was low in the mid 1700s but then I got the sat guide from TutorFox: http://www.tutorfox.com/satguide.html and my score went up to 2190 (800 math, 760 writing, 630 reading). I highly recommend this guide for anyone wishing to get a higher SAT score.

Some universites require one of them, so check. Otherwise, you might not need to take them at all. The main difference between the tests is that the Midwest likes the ACT better, and everywhere else likes the SAT better.
