PSAT and SAT?

I took the PSAT last year in my sophomore year, and did pretty well (got over 40 letters from different universities), and I asked teachers if I needed to retake it again this year (my junior year). They said no, so I signed up for the SAT that takes place in both October and December of this year hoping to get ahead of the game. So later on, I found out harshly from a counselor that I need to take PSAT, and she was telling me to change my SAT dates (even though I’ve already paid for them and if i change them there is a penalty fee). So my plan right now is to take the PSAT again (which is after my first SAT date), and I will still take the SAT since I am unable to change the date of my SATs.

What are the chances of me doing fairly well on the first SAT? I am in regular English class (Principles of English II) but I am taking Pre Calc/Trig this year (average juniors where I live take Alg. II). Also, I’ve been practicing w/ the SAT practice book that my school gave me and got 1740.

According to the 2006 results on Wikipedia (see the Wikipedia link below), you’re in the top 72% or so for whatever test you scored 1740 on. From what I’ve heard the practice tests (like the ones in the workbooks) are very much like the actual SAT, so I’d say you’ll be fine for average schools.

The way I understand the PSAT, you don’t need to take it at all, unless you want to qualify for the National Merit scholarship program, in which case you’ll need to take it this year.
