Pre-med is not a major but a specific set of courses you must take in order to be eligible to apply to medical school. You can be pre-med at any college, but where you go for your undergraduate degree matters a whole lot to medical school. UC Berkeley is the feeder school for UCSF, ranked #5 for research and #8 for primary care by U.S. News. UCLA is the feeder school to its own medical school (Geffen School of Medicine), ranked #13 for research and #18 for primary care. If you are interested in attending a UC medical school, you should complete your undergraduate degree at the same campus.

Like most other universities, Berkeley does not offer a specific pre-med major. Few colleges in the United States do, because there is no specific major required for admission to medical school or other health related schools. Berkeley’s acceptance rate to medical school is higher than the national average.

You can prepare by completing a major in something such as bioengineering. While any major at the undergraduate level is acceptable, you would want to choose something that would fulfill the premedical requirements to prepare for medical school. That would be chemistry, both inorganic and organic, physics, zoology, biology, and English and/or other languages. In today’s world, a good background in electronics is especially helpful.

If you want to go to med school after college, you don’t have to be part of a specific pre-med program. Most college students who want to go on to med school major in either biology or chemistry (or major in one and minor in the other), but you can choose any major you like.

Whether they’re part of your major or not, you’ll have to take one full year of each of the following:

1. English Writing

2. General Biology

3. General Chemistry

4. General Physics

5. Organic Chemistry

Some med schools will want you to have taken a semester of:

1. Biochemistry

2. Calculus

3. Statistics

If you have any electives left over, it’s in your interest to take these to prepare for the MCAT:

1. Analytical Chemistry

2. Anatomy

3. Genetics

4. Physiology

5. Optics and Modern Physics (if not covered in gen. physics)

Schools will want you to have a high GPA in your science subjects, as well as a high GPA overall. So major in what you enjoy, and can do well in.

Most are pre-med even though they may not have it defined as a major. Determine what medical school you would like to attend, and then base your decision about the university and pre-med studies on that.

My friend is pre-med at UC Santa Cruz. All UC schools should have pre-med. As picky as my friend was, he chose Santa Cruz. Though I know his first choice was UCLA, which is nearly impossible to get in.
