Columbia is an ivy league school; chances are you have no chance.

To be competitive for any ivy, you GENERALLY need a 3.8 or higher GPA and a 2000 or higher SAT. I was deferred and then rejected from Penn with a 3.8 and a 2100…and I’m Native American :p. Unless you’ve got something reallyreally special, you have to get that SAT score WAY up. As far as extracurriculars go, quality and not quantity is generally the way to go…I would need more specifics there.

You have a shot.

While your academic stats could be better and your extracurriculars do need to be unique/meaningful, each university wants to build a diverse campus. People here say you would have a shot with higher SATs and a better GPA–but Columbia rejects valedictorians and people with perfect 2400s also, while they admit people with lower stats–in the name of diversity.

You have an interesting background in not being born in the US, and while they have plenty of international applicants, this does give you some help. Perhaps in your essay and interview you can really sell them on your unique and valuable personality.

There are so many factors that you can’t rule it out for sure. I got into Harvard this past year with a 2260 SAT and some solid extracurriculars. If you need SAT help check out INeedAPencil.com and its blog.

A good college guide will usually give you the minimums a school will accept. 1710 on SATs will not get you into Columbia – you would need something closer to 2200.

1710 is way too low to even be considered for Columbia. It’s one of the top 10 colleges and their standards are extremely high.

I would say your chances are pretty good, but just to make sure, you should look up some stuff on their requirements. Try collegeboard.com; you may have to make a screen name, but you can look at different colleges and see things like the average SAT scores of the students they accept. Good luck, and I hope you do well.

sorry. most likely you wont get in. 1710 is a pretty average SAT score. it will get you into state schools. but not ivy league or any other prestigious schools.

in 2007 , columbia reject more than 20000 thousand student who are full sat score on math . and columbia reject more than 17000 thousand student who are full point on verbal . i think your chance are 0 percent . lower class lvy like cornell , you need to get at least 2000 point on sat . and consider columbia are lot harder than cornell .

I would say good but who knows. If you are not white you will have a better chance then if you are white. I hate to say that but unfortunately it is true. Also if you know anyone that went there have them be a reference on your application. Good Luck!!!
