I failed my AP exam but got a good grade in the course…how does that work out?

I took AP Spanish junior year and I just got my AP exam results back – I got a 2. My teacher gave me a 91 (for both semesters). How will this affect my application to colleges?

I also took AP Chemistry as a junior and got a 5 on the exam and an 88 in the class.

Colleges don’t usually consider AP scores when you apply to college. If you want to send an AP report to any of the colleges, I first suggest you cancel your AP Spanish score (if for some reason they don’t let you do that at this point, since you have seen your scores, you can pay a fee for the score to be withheld on any college board report you send to an university–it’s $10 per report to hide one score). Whether you withhold or cancel the Spanish grade, you can send an AP report to all the colleges you wish–it is $15 per report. Of course, with the withholding fee, if that ends up applying to you, you’ll have to spend an extra $10 per report to hide the Spanish score.

Sadly, I think the colleges will care more about your grades in the AP classes rather than your scores when it comes to admissions purposes. So your Spanish results will probably look better than your Chemistry results if the colleges you are applying to don’t consider AP scores in the admissions process.

An “A” in an AP class is excellent. This will look great on a college application, since AP classes are weighted a full point higher. (That’s a class worth 5 points on the 4 point scale!)

Colleges don’t look at your AP Exam grades when considering you for admission. They are only used once you get accepted, since they will help determine what courses you will be enrolled in.

AP classes are designed to help prepare you to pass the test, but ultimately the class and test are separate.

Each teacher has her/his own method of grading and that determines your grade in the class. That is the grade that is figured into your overall GPA.

Your grade on the test simply determines whether or not you get college credit for the course. Taking the classes provide you with some exposure to college level work and getting a good grade in that always impresses colleges.

It depends on the school. I applied before I got my test scores back and i got a 2 on my AP english. At my school they don’t base course selections on AP test scores, so it didn’t really matter, but other schools are probably different. You should try and contact the schools you are applying to and ask about their policies. Hope this helps.

Yeah. They will have to all be out. Call them up and ask. If you have not got the rating record by means of September one million, you REALLY have to name them and ask. The touch know-how is for your AP scan %, which you’ll have held onto.

thats fine, but colleges will question that.

AP exams dont really count in admissions, but they do glance at them and real high scores is a plus.

you can cancel it, i presume. but i wouldnt. just keep it, its better.

it happens so don’t stress it. you don’t have to send your AP marks to colleges. you just won’t be able to use it for a pre-requisite in college but you wouldn’t have been able to anyways because of your mark.
