Go to your public library and ask the librarian for an SAT study book. They probably have some, and you should be able to check it out for free. Make sure you get one that was published within the past two years, because the SAT was significantly changed in 2005. Also, make sure you get a book that covers the verbal part of the exam; there are some SAT books that only cover the math part.

Your public library may also subscribe to an online test review program called LearnATest – ask the librarian about that. Look through a copy of Time Magazine or such so that you have an idea of what’s going on in the news and can use that material for examples in your essays. The 3 most important gimmicks are length, good clear handwriting, and an effective opening paragraph. The most important feature of substance is to use organization. The worst thing you can do is to have run-on sentences. Also avoid using the word “stuff”.

Only way is to actually read and write. Grab some books that you would never normally read (with big words and complex topics) and read them, then write a book report on it.
