Honors and AP classes?

Okay, so this has been bugging me for a while now. I’m in 5 honors classes and my ranking is 102 out of like 550 + students.

Now there are people at my school that are taking Honors, AP and are involved with after school activites but they’re in the top 10%. Not all of them study 24/7 (I sure as hell don’t) So how do they manage to pull it off? Are they just born smart or something?

people are not born smarter at all. some people have the ability to glance at someting and remember it forever , some are just lucky, and some just know a hell of alot. im in AP classes, i know how you feel. you say “i got a 75 on the test, i studied till like 12 last night.” then someone else says “well i got a 95 and i studied ZIP” it just kinda pisses you off, like their cheating or something. so dont sweat it, everyone has their special areas in education like im good in science (good as in know alot, but not enough) i understand it but, i dont study it so i dont have the best grade in the world. some people it take sforever for them to understand it.

and to the poster below, my school gets hardly any money, compared to some other non AP schools, and we ave one of the oldest schools in our state, and outdated equipemnt, trust me i ahve friends that go to other schools. we get new equipment when the district/state decides to buy it for all their schools. and my school is ALL AP and IB, in 2005 my school was third best in the nation, NATION, not state, now were are in under ten not sure what. youde think wed get somehat new equipment, but nope. and im in the 10th grade doing algebra 2, and were passing it, its not like were all failing, so its not all “just for money.”

if you take honors biology you will have an option of taking the AP biology test if you want – likewise with any other course. However from experience, I have taken Honors Biology and am now in AP Biology and the AP course is much more in-depth and rigorous. If you are willing to spend a lot of extra time and effort (but a book etc.) then it may be worthwhile. It ultimately depends on whether or not you took the AP test which is the deciding factor on whether or not you are eligible to receive such credit (you score badly on the test and you dont get credit even if you have an A in the class, likewise, you can get a 5 (the best score) on the AP test and havea C in the class and you will be eligible for credit). also, if you plan on majoring in the subject you are taking an AP class for, often times colleges will give you credit hours for scoring well but make you take their class in that subject anyways. good luck!

As a retired teacher, and now a substitute from grades Pre-K through highschool, I can tell you Honors classes and AP classes are a joke, just as the Gifted and Talented classes are.

State education departments have not only “dumbed down” students, they have “dumbed down” teachers!

I have substituted in first-grade classes where the majority of students cannot read Pre-K books: Second grade classes where students are not capable of reading on a Pre-K or first-grade level. Yet, our schools are “passing” these students to the next grade. I have had highschool students in AP English classes who can’t even identify a noun or write a complete sentence!

Schools receive funds for AP and Honors classes, just as they get money for ELL, ED, MR, and the Gifted and Talented. The more students a school can enroll in each of these, the more money they get. Schools are also not concerned with illegal aliens ( no matter what country they come from) because it boosts their attendance, which means they get more state and Federal aid.

You are still young, and may not realize the consequences state and Federal programs are having on our education system; but, 10 or 20 years from now, when your children are in school, you will “sing another song”.
