It’s okay to take the SAT sophomore year to get a benchmark of your abilities. Typically students are recommended to take the test during spring of junior year and then again in the fall of senior year before applications are due for college. So taking it sophomore year can work to your advantage because if you take an accelerate courseload, you already know all of the material on the SAT (it’s a reasoning test) and finishing it early will open up more time for other things like extracurricular activities and SAT IIs (and a life!)/impress the admissions officers that you succeeded on the test so early. Plan so that you don’t test more than 3 times…and remember that taking a practice test in a book will not show up for colleges and is a lot cheaper! Best of luck.

It’s smart. I started in — get ready — seventh grade. I know people who started in sixth grade. So in my book, you’re on the late side, if anything. Even I was on the late side. The earlier, the better, and it pays off. The SAT is all about familiarity. I took it once a year for five years. Fortunantely, because two of those were in middle school, they don’t show up on my score report. Every year, I improved. By junior year, I had cleared 2300, and I didn’t have to take it in my senior year, which is hectic enough with college applications and everything like that. It’s nice to get it out of the way as soon as possible.

Here’s the thing, though; memorizing 5000 words isn’t going to help you if you don’t know what the heck to do with them. It’s much more important to prep not just for general things like “reading” and “grammar” and “algebra 2/trig” but for the SAT itself. I would strongly warn against spending significant amounts of time learning thousands of words that aren’t even going to be on that test. Yes, it’s good to know about a hundred or two heavily hit words, but after that, it’s a waste of your time. I don’t have a particularly strong vocabulary, but I still got an 800 on the critical reading. And the PSAT isn’t as good a practice for the SAT as the SAT itself, for obvious reasons (especially for the endurance required). In fact, I consider the SAT practice for the PSAT because guess what? the PSAT is a one-shot deal once you’re a junior, and it’s worth thousands of dollars if you do well enough. The SAT can technically be retaken as many times as you’re willing to do that to yourself.

Get yourself some SAT prep materials, and good luck!

No, don’t take it. Take the PSAT in October instead. Colleges see all of your SAT scores. If you take it so early and bomb it, there is no way you can erase that score. Even if you get a higher score, colleges will still note the lower score. PSAT is like a shorter version of the SAT, but it has the same types of questions and everything. (But it does not have the essay part). After you receive your score for the PSAT and get a score that you wanted, then take it. You will be still in your sophomore year when you receive your PSAT score. Then you could prep a little more and take it in March, May, or June test dates.

Good luck with memorizing 5000 words in 90 days.

It is ALWAYS good to take the PSAT. You can take the SAT three times. I would take it once sophomore, once junior (if you’re unhappy with your score). If you take it a third time, they average all 3 scores which may or may not be good.

no, dont. memorize the words over a longer period of time so that you can actually recall them and use them in your essays instead of just remembering vague definitions when you memorized them seperately. omg. who cares about alg2trig. youre freaking out. you have 2 more years to take the SAT and you can only like take it three times, just take it later.. and take the PSAT first… ugh. dont listen to your dad….

If you can, you definitely should. From your info, you sound like you are very capable. But watch out for the vocab. Make sure you know the words very well. Good luck!
