What are possible instructions for multiple disabilities?
Favorite Answer
Instructions for a specific thing?
Of course EVERY situation depends highly on the individual and the severity of the disabilities.
My experience is that a direct teaching strategy proves most effective. Generalizing that your “student” has cognitive and physical impairments, it is best to take the executive approach.
Your behavior management should simply consist of ignoring the bad behavior as much as possible ( of course, don’t ignore it if it could cause harm) and reward the good behavior.
Verbal praise is a beautiful thing.
Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
Good luck to you! 🙂
Just thought of something else… if you are looking for specific things to teach someone with disabilities… Again, depending on the individual and severity….
You might teach them how to follow instructions, how to make a decision, how to respond to teasing, the proper way to obtain attention, etc…
There are some great ideas with simple cue words to remember in a little book called “How to Deal with Students Who Challenge and Defy Authority” by Stephanie Peterson.
The strategies and teaching methods in this short read work with all students, not just those that are “challenging.” Sometimes a students background knowledge doesn’t contain “how” to do some of the simplest things.
Again, good luck.
